Brown Noise for Babies
The low, muffled end of the noise spectrum, and the volume and distance rules that keep it nursery-safe.

Why deep sound suits small ears
The womb argument for baby noise is usually made loosely, and the measured version favors the deep end. Microphones placed inside the uterus picked up a small boost around 125 Hz and a cut of as much as 10 dB in the higher frequencies (Richards 1992). The prenatal soundscape is a low, muffled whoosh, a gentle tilt closer to pink noise than to bright white hiss.
The settling evidence itself comes from white noise. The best-known randomized trial put 40 newborns to the test: with white noise playing, 16 of the 20 in that arm were asleep within five minutes, while only 5 of the 20 controls settled on their own (Spencer 1990). Any steady, low-volume broadband sound masks the same door-click and floorboard spikes, so the case for brown is comfort, not proof of superiority. No noise color has established a durable sleep-duration benefit (Riedy 2021).
How loud, how far, how long
Nursery sound machines measure louder than parents expect. In lab tests of 14 infant machines at full volume, every one broke the 50 dBA hospital-nursery limit from about a foot away, and three passed 85 dBA, a level over adult workplace limits if it runs eight hours (Hugh 2014). Moving the device does more than the dial: average output dropped from roughly 79 dBA at 30 cm, about a foot, to 63 dBA at two meters, about six and a half feet.
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2023 noise report says to keep any sound machine as far from the crib as the room allows, as quiet as it will go, and running no longer than needed (Balk 2023). A workable target is 50 dBA measured at the crib, softer than normal conversation. Set the sleep timer below and the sound cuts out once your baby has settled.

Is brown noise safe for babies?
The evidence is not reassuring enough to ignore: a 2024 review of 20 studies, 13 of them in children, saw developmental harm from continuous moderate-volume noise in animal studies, found the limited human evidence pointing the same way, and advised capping both volume and running time (De Jong 2024). Quiet, distant, and on a timer is the way to use it. Anything specific to your own baby’s hearing or sleep is a question for your pediatrician.
Brown noise or white noise for a baby?
For masking they do the same job. The measured womb soundscape is low and muffled, which is an argument for the deeper, softer end (Richards 1992), and many parents find rumble less grating at 3 a.m. Volume and distance matter far more than color.

Aim near 50 dBA measured at the crib, softer than normal conversation, from the far side of the room, never inside or attached to the crib (Hugh 2014; Balk 2023). Let the timer end the sound once your baby has settled.
